Government Strengthens Dedication to Rice Production, Agricultural Development and Youth Empowerment at RVCDP 6th Steering Committee
In a significant move to enhance Agricultural productivity and support Regional reconstruction, the Government of Cameroon has reaffirmed its dedication to the Rice Value Chain Development Project (RVCDP). This commitment was highlighted during the 6th Steering Committee Meeting chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe, in Bamenda.

Minister Mbairobe characterized the RVCDP as a central element of Government policy under President Paul Biya. The initiative aims to boost Rural incomes, Alleviate poverty, and assist in post conflict recovery efforts in the North West and South West Regions.
“This Project aligns with the President’s vision for elevating living standards in Rural communities, creating job opportunities, and combating poverty,” said Minister Mbairobe. He added that the RVCDP is closely linked to reconstruction initiatives that include the rehabilitation of schools, health centers, and water infrastructure.

During the meeting, the Committee approved a budget of 24 Billion Francs to fund vital activities for 2026. This investment will focus on enhancing land development and expanding rice production across three major production areas:
- Ndop Valley (Ngoketunjia Division), North West Region
- Sanchou – West Region
- Magda – Far North Region
The allocated funds will cover the construction of farm to market roads, procurement of agricultural inputs, infrastructure upgrades, and the acquisition of modern production equipment.

Emphasizing the importance of mechanization, Minister Mbairobe stated, “We have a substantial production gap to fill. The machinery donated to NOWERICA will facilitate land development and empower technical teams to conduct effective field operations.”
The Minister also shared key achievements of the RVCDP, noting:
- Contracts worth 10.5 billion francs signed for swamp rice development.
- An increase in the execution rate from 9.8% to 28.8%.
- Disbursement rising from 2.6% to approximately 9% in the past year.
- Active collaborations with financial partners, including an interest from the Saudi Fund in co-financing.
Additional funding has been secured for baseline surveys, environmental and social safeguards, and institutional strengthening. The establishment of farmer Cooperatives and Unions is also recognized as a sustainable support system for producers. With project assistance, 4.5 tons of basic seed were distributed to 139 seed multipliers, spanning 1,200 hectares and targeting an output of 8,000 tons of rice.
The meeting also presented End of Internship certificates to 15 young professionals, highlighting the Project's commitment to Youth Empowerment.

Furthermore, heavy-duty equipment worth 2.4 Billion Francs was handed over to the North West Rice Cooperatives Association (NOWERICA).

These concerted efforts underscores Governments dedication to transforming Agriculture and fostering economic growth in Rural communities.
