Boosting Coffee Production in the North West Region; MIDENO Trains/Equips Coffee Cooperatives!
Farmers from various Coffee Cooperatives in the North West Region have received vital training on enhancing Arabica Coffee yields and integrating short cycle crops like plantain to improve food security. The training, organized by the North West Development Authority (MIDENO) in Bamenda, had as main objective to revitalize the Region's coffee sector, which has experienced a decline in production over the years.

The Director General of the North West Development Authority (MIDENO), Cletus Anye Matoyah, expressed optimism about the Region's potential, noting that MIDENO will provide farmers with coffee seeds and organic fertilizers to scale up production. This initiative comes as the Kola Coffee brand under the North West Cooperative Association (NWCA) continues to rank among the best globally.

Coffee remains a crucial cash crop in the North West Region, with its climate favouring the cultivation of both Arabica and Robusta varieties. Historically, the sector has been a significant income source for approximately 50,000 people. However, production has declined due to abandoned farms. To revive the sector, MIDENO has already distributed over 150,000 coffee plantlets to farmers. The training seeks to enhance both the quality and quantity of Regional production.

According to Ndeh Emmanuel, Director of MIDENO's Technical Department, cooperatives have been reorganized and equipped to promote large scale Kola Coffee production.

Farmers who attended the training expressed enthusiasm, stating that it will not only improve their skills and yields but also contribute to strengthening the Region's economy. With MIDENO's support, the North West Region is poised to reclaim its position as a major coffee producer, benefiting both its people and the economy as a whole.
