Bafut Elite Launch Groundbreaking Initiative to Reduce Maternal Mortality; Distribute Maternal Health Vouchers!
Pregnancy has become a perilous journey for many women especially in the conflict torn Bafut, with limited access to healthcare, poverty, and malnutrition, contributing to high maternal and infant mortality rates. However, a glimmer of hope has emerged with the launch of “Operation Zero Maternal Mortality”
According to the Vision bearer, Honorable Gordon Chebelem Anyele ,the vouchers will cover all expenses borne from conception to post delivery. The initiative has already made a significant impact, with over 200 vouchers distributed to residents. Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude, citing the life saving difference the vouchers will make.
Honorable Akongwa Helen Ngwa, Alternate Member of Parliament for Bafut/Tubah expressed satisfaction with the mission of the initiative which targets zero mortality rates as far as childbearing is concerned in Bafut locality.
Health officials and local Authorities have endorsed the program as North West Regional Delegate of Public Health, Dr Ambe Lionel and Director of Bafut District Hospital, Dr Nde Ndifor say the initiative which was long overdue, will not only save lives by reducing maternal/infant mortality but will also reshape health practices in Bafut, the Region and Country as a whole.
Operation Zero Maternal Mortality demonstrates the power of local solidarity and community led initiatives as the model is expected to inspire other conflict affected Regions, showing that even in challenging environments, maternal deaths can be reduced through collective action.
The Bafut Elite led by Vision bearer of Operation Zero Maternal Mortality is calling on more community members and Development Partners to support the initiative, ensuring that every pregnant woman in Bafut has access to safe and dignified care. This according to them is the only way out for safe and dignified maternal health care.
Operation Zero Maternal Mortality Presenting Vouchers to Bafut Population
Maternal health in Cameroon still remains a significant concern, with the country recording one of the highest maternal mortality rates in recent time. According to the World Banks Gender Data Portal, Cameroon reported about 406 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2022, highlighting the need for urgent interventions. Many women in Cameroon lack access to proper healthcare services, contributing to high maternal mortality rates. Adolescent pregnancies pose a significant risk to maternal and child health as 108 out of every 1,000 girls aged 15-19 are giving birth, with about 12-13 cases of maternal mortality recorded daily. It is hoped that the recently launched National Strategy on Reproductive, Maternal, Child, Adolescent, and Nutrition Health (RMNCAH-Nut) for 2025-2030 will address maternal health issues in the country.
